A. Coaching Awards the steps
The Lancashire Aikikai is a member of the national governing body the British Aikido Board (BAB). The BAB promotes a Coaching Award scheme, which the Aikikai endorses:

The first part on the Coaching pathway is when you achieve 1st Dan although you can start on this prior to this grade.

The second part is obtaining a First Aid qualification, which meets the required standard. If you don't obtain an award of an appropriate standard you will find it can't be accepted for the purposes of the Coaching scheme. If in doubt talk to Sue Baird before enrolment on a course.

Note: First Aid can be can done before the first part if you want.

You will also need specific permission from the Head of our Association..... see Pathway

Further Coaching Development

The next step is at 2nd Dan where if you want to you can go for the Coach Level 2 Award (this is up to you as the BAB requirement is that all people taking classes should hold at least the Level 1 Coach Award). Beyond that is the Level 3 Award. The CL2 Application form is on the BAB website

You can, as you get towards this Level 2, start attending the Sports Coach UK external courses that are a requirement of the Level 2 & 3 Awards. The BAB organises these courses and attending these are recommended in preference to the Sport Coaches UK ones but the choice is yours.

Insurance is lower in premiums as you gain higher qualifications

B How to apply for a Coaching Course
You should register your interest on-line for a course with the BAB and also see courses presently available. The authorisation of the Association is still required - the BAB obtain this by them contacting Sue Baird - so it is important to have made yourself known to Sue - so that matters aren't delayed.

It is possible to register using paper and you need to download a form - Sue can arrange for this to be sent to you or can be down loaded Click here

Sue Baird the Association's Coaching Liaison Officer will assist you at any stage - but you need to contact her and make yourself known to her.

C First Aid
The Aikikai has a cycle of organising a course every 18 months. All are welcome on the courses even those who are not yet 1st Dan. After all First Aid is a valuable life time skill and the more First Aiders a club has the easier an emergency can be handled.

Level of qualification that are acceptable are set out on a further page Click here

All Instructors, who take unsupervised classes are required by the Aikikai to maintain current First Aid qualifications (usually renewable every 3 years). This is not needed if you intend to be an "Assist only" instructor who never takes a class unsupervised.

D Insurance

The Aikikai and the British Aikido Board require those who teach/instruct to hold approved insurance.

Application is to Sam Wilson, the Aikikai's membership secretary but is handled normally thru your Club

G Coach Children Award or Sports Coach UK (Coaching Young Persons)
There is a recommendation from the Aikikai that Coaches and “Assist only” Instructors should also under take the BAB "Young People course" or Sport Coach UK's "Coaching Children and Young People course". This recommendation should be considered particularly if you are involved with any class that attracts juniors.

This is for the instructor who is expected to be called upon, in the near future, to take the lead in coaching classes involving children and to do so without the supportive presence of other qualified coaches.

This is a one day or four hour course for instructors that will take classes involving children without supervision. Legally a child is anyone under 18 years of age.
