A. Coaching Awards the steps

The Lancashire Aikikai is a member of the national governing body the British Aikido Board (BAB). The BAB promotes a Coaching Award scheme, which the Aikikai endorses:

The first part on the Coaching pathway is when you achieve 1st Dan. [The original Assistant Coach is no longer available and prospective Instructors can now proceed directly to Coach Level 1. The Assistant Coach is not an equivalent to the new Coach Level 1.]

The second part is obtaining a First Aid qualification, which meets the required standard. If you don't obtain an award of an appropriate standard you will find it can't be accepted for the purposes of the Coaching scheme. If in doubt talk to Sue Baird before enrolment on a course.

Note: First Aid can be can done before the first part if you want.

Further Coaching Development

The next step is at 2nd Dan where if you want to you can go for the Coach Level 2 Award (this is up to you as the BAB requirement is that all people taking classes should hold at least the Level 1 Coach Award). Beyond that is the Level 3 Award.

You can, as you get towards this level 2, start attending the Sports Coach UK [National Coaching Foundation's] external courses that are a requirement of the Award. [See appendix 5] The BAB actually organises these courses and attending these are recommended in preference to the NCF ones.

B How to apply for Coaching Awards

You will need to include a stamped self addressed envelope to receive information about the next course.

The BAB will tell you when you are booked on one of their courses. There is also a email system from the BAB and you can register for their emails to grev.cooke@ntlworld.com put Coaching Emails in your title of the email.

C First Aid

The Aikikai is on a cycle of organising a course every 18 months. All are welcome on the courses even those who are not yet 1st Dan. After all First Aid is a valuable life time skill and the more First Aiders a club has the easier an emergency can be handled.
