Instructor Insurance
All Coaches who take classes unsupervised or assist(supervised) with classes must be insured via the BAB Insurance scheme.

Taking classes - Insurance for teaching is only provided for those holding a BAB Coaching Award Level 1, 2 or 3. If the Coach teaches those under 18 years then additionally a current CRB check is needed via the BAB. (See Child Protection)

Assisting in Classes - Those who hold a BAB Coaching award and help the class instructor rather than taking classes unsupervised can be registered free under “assist only” for the insurance protection under strict conditions. Please refer to the Insurance guidelines above................ a part of which is reproduced at the end of this page.

Instructor Insurance Costs / Application
Perkins Slade Prices for £5m cover for Level 1 Coaches - 2009/10 fees have been increased by 5% which is the first increase since 2005/2006. Each quarter following 1st March, the annual fee is reduced proportionally.

                March – May: £52.50 (12 months cover)
                 June – August: £39.38
                Sept – Nov: £26.25
                Dec – Feb: £13.30

From 2008/09 there have been differential rates for the Coaching Level a person holds. The £52.50 above refers to a Level 1 coach; the fees reflecting the higher qualifications mean lower premiums (There are no pro rata fee reductions):

Coach level 2 the insurance is £42
Coach level 3 the insurance is £31.50

A Insurance Certificate in the form of a blue slip issued indicates cover as "Full Instructor & Student" or "Assist only Instructor & Student". Coaching cover expires end of February and should be renewed prior to the end of that month. Instructor's have student cover rolled into their Instructor's insurance and therefore are not covered to practice from the end of February until they have renewed.

7.4.3 Summary of cover is stated as follows: In the event of negligence of an instructor, which leads to injury or damage or libel to a third party and or 3rd party property. The policy is personal to the instructor, operates wherever instruction is given throughout the world and covers such circumstances as injuries through demonstrations, inadequate supervision or 'mis-matches' between grades where the junior grade gets injured.
7.4.4 Limit of Indemnity is £5,000,000

January 2009 BAB Executive records in their minutes - There is no upper age limit for Professional Indemnity cover for BAB Member instructors.

Incident/Accident Reporting by Clubs / Instructors/Coaches
Coaches should note the BAB now operates a incident reporting system rather than a claim form. Visit the BAB web site Appendix G above and also our page dealing with this matter.

"Assist Only" instructor's -- Many holders of the BAB's "Coach award only assist with instruction, even though they are qualified to take charge of a class. Where these Coaches (or Assistant Coaches), have no intention of taking charge of a class & only require insurance to cover assisting a fully qualified / insured Instructor, there is no need to purchase additional P.I. insurance. But an application form has to be completed and returned to the BAB via the Aikikai.

The Aikikai does not require First Aid for these "Assist only" but does require a CRB check and formal permission from our Head of Association

Perkins Slade is prepared to provide indemnity cover to registered "Assist Only Instructors", at no cost, providing the following conditions are met:

  • They hold a BAB Coach qualification Level 1 or higher
  • They only work under the direct supervision of a fully qualified BAB Coach who is a current holder of P.I. insurance.
  • They hold current ---Member to Member" liability insurance thru the blue insurance certificate
  • The students within the class all hold 'Member to Member" liability insurance as students on the blue insurance certificate.

Clubs - Liability Insurance
BAB require details of all clubs to be registered – please continue to advise the BAB Secretary in writing of any changes / additions to your club list. This should be done through Bryan Bateman.

Any new location should be registered before conducting classes.

If any clubs operate on a full committee basis (e.g., have a Constitution, Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, etc), they will also need to take out Civil Liability Insurance. The BAB doesn't operate this facility but quotes are available from Perkins Slade, the brokers that the BAB use.

Officials - Liability Insurance
BAB require details of Officers and Officials to be supplied to be covered under their Association policies. This should be done through Phil Purcell our Insurance Officer
