Ideals of the Samurai

This is an extract of the writings of Japanese Warriors:-

"The regulations of Imagawa Ryusheen Imagawaî

Without knowledge of learning one will ultimately have no victories. Cormorant fishing and falconing are pleasures that uselessly destroy life they are forbidden.

It is forbidden to pass the death sentence on a man who has committed a minor crime.

It is forbidden to use favoritism and excuse a man that has committed a major crime.

It is forbidden to forget the great depth of kindness one owes to his masters and ancestors and there by make light of the virtue of loyalty and filial piety.

Be mindful of the fact that as you know the worth of your own retainers the master knows yours in the same way.

It is forbidden to have contempt for wise retainers and prefer flatterers and oneís actions be influenced by those conditions.

It is forbidden to be prideful of oneís cleverness and to ridicule others about everything."

All these rules may not apply to our way of life, but should be kept in mind at all times.

Principal Lancashire Aikikai.

"Basics are important for anything. Basics are important especially in Aikido. I have repeated many times that it is not exaggeration to say that basics are what Aikido is all about. Allow me to talk about these basics"

1) A pure heart.

2) Calmness in movement.

3) When facing an Enemy, unite with him.

4) Balances in the body.

5) Timing.

Taken from "Aikido New No 74" Gozo Shioda's "An Aikido Life"

For expansion of these points read Aiki-News. Have you hired your copy to read yet from your Club Leader ?

Chiba Sensei's Course was attended by about eight of us in Mid August in Bridgenorth. Notice was unfortunately short but all had a good and inspiring time. The Sports Hall was covered in mats giving on the Sunday ample room for over 200 to practice together, Saturday was attended by about 100. The atmosphere was friendly and every one was no doubt impressed by the ease of Sensei's movements.

Seeing certain techniques the way Sensei did them altered my perspective of certain of the basic techniques, and re-enforced other points that have been taught within our Aikikai. Certainly the attention Shomen or the movement of the upswing of the bokken is the most important fact I came away with.
