ASSOCIATION
NEWS
Firstly, let me wish a Happy New Year to all members of the Lancashire AIKIKAI. At the end of 1990 the financial position of the Association was as follows: Receipts - £2,240.34 This year there will be special courses organised for weapons training, meditation and other subjects related to AIKIDO. Some may be during the week, others at the weekend. This is due to public demand! M Mucha I am looking forward to 1991 (a full New Years AIKIDO to bash at). Also to the new JO/BOKKEN syllabus. W Smalley CLUB NEWS Trafford Aikido Club Following a successful five week Beginners' Course, Trafford Aikido Club will have a class each Sunday night from 7.30 - 9.00 pm at Altrincham Leisure Centre, Oakfield Road, Altrincham (Next to Railway Station). Good facilities, showers and bar. All Lancashire Aikikai members welcome. (Please see Map) H Yohannan Poulton Opens Three weeks ago a short demo heralded the opening of the latest club to the AIKIKAI. There were about 40 people watching at the Poulton Community and Youth Centre, 15 of whom came forward to practise. Facilities at the Centre are good and the future
of the Club looks assured under the instruction of Richard Kacperek. I am sure that we all wish Richard and the Club well. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING At the end of the last course, the Annual General Meeting took place and included in the business were the following items: Mr Mucha told us that he would be introducing a weapons grading syllabus. If he didn't, then somebody else would! This aspect of training and practice will include: KATANA, BOKKEN, JO, TANTO. There was interest in another meditation course following the one at Hyde. It will be arranged at a later date. Course fees for 1991 will be £5.00 for the general and £3.00 for the teachers. It was suggested that DAN grades pay for all courses, but it was carried that DAN grades will pay for teachers' courses. ED 'PRIDE GOES AFTER A FALL' Almost a well known saying but usually the words are 'before a fall'. In the last newsletter I wrote about technique effectiveness; this is not unconnected. One of the biggest problems in the western world is the presence of ego. I do this, I do that, I want, I will. At the heart of many religions and at the heart of AIKIDO lies the destruction of the ego. Don't be alarmed by the word 'destruction' but consider that in our practise of AIKIDO we are seeking to control and conquer ourselves. This may involve overcoming such things as fear, anger, aggression, frustration, and in many cases, pain. When two people practise, they are therefore not trying to overcome each other, but themselves. They harmonise with each other. The outcome should be - no winner, no loser, nobody better or worse. After a successful technique, regardless of pain or clouds. Of dust on the mat, the feeling should not be of pride after UKE's fall. Therefore our well-known saying should be something like . . . PRIDE GOES AFTER A PRACTICE! Graham Harrison LIST OF LANCASHIRE AIKIKAI CLUBS Altrincham: Seamons Moss Community Centre, Oldfield Road, Altrincham.
