Following the item in the last newsletter about dangerous exercises an
example of one such exercise is illustrated and explained. The standing
straight leg toe touch is widely practised in all types of sports. It
is also considered the world's most dangerous exercise!

When doing this exercise you have a perfect
/ opportunity to ask the THREE. BIG QUESTIONS:
1 Why am I doing this exercise? To stretch my
hamstrings? To stretch my back? To strengthen my back?
2 Is it potentially dangerous? Yes I may damage my spine and if I bounce
to touch my toes I may also tear hamstring or back extensor muscles damage
supporting ligaments and compress the intervertebral discs.
3 Are there SAFE alternatives? YES Hydrostatic disc pressure is least
when you are lying flat. Your body is totally relaxed when you are fully
supported by the floor and as a result your stretch potential is greatly
increased. Standing and also seated toe touching causes total body tension
rather than relaxation. Only fully relaxed muscles can be stretched safely
and with control.

Some students have been asking what we say in Japanese when taking the
bows
At the beginning of the class we say to Sensei
"onegai shimasu" (pronounced as on-ee-gai-shim-ass) and this
means ''Let us practise'.
At the end of a class we say "domo arigato
gozaimashita sensei" (pronounced as domo-ariga-to gozai-mashte) and
is a very polite meaning of 'Thank you'.
