Beginners Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just turn up and have a go?
Yes - No experience needed.

We need to cover some paperwork so please turn up 15 mins before the advertised time .

If you prefer, you can come and watch a class first and have a chat - or just have a go!

It is better to contact the instructor at your nearest Club before your first visit.

What to wear?
We recommend you wear something loose and un-restricting like a track suit. Please try to avoid anything with zips/buttons etc. Shorts aren't the best idea. Keikogi (training suit) from other martial arts are fine as well.

Please remove jewellery, or tape over rings, as loose jewellery can get snagged and cause injury.

In order to avoid grit or dirt going onto a mat - we wear flip flops or sandals to the mat edge.

Provided you can get to the mat edge in anything other than bare feet then that is acceptable.

Do I need to be fit?
No level of fitness is required to start, only a willingness to learn and have a go. There is nothing to prevent anyone having a go unless you have medical advice against this activity. Our induction process covers a health declaration - so that we are aware of factors that may limit or alter the way we might cover parts of what we might want to teach you.

Junior Classes

Many of our Instructors are qualified to teach children. However, some of our clubs only take adults i.e. 18+

Best to check with the Club instructor for their policy on accepting under 18's, and their safeguarding arrangements.

Are training sessions on all year round?
Yes - except in holiday seasons when certain classes may be cancelled. Contact the local club for details.

How big are classes?
Class sizes vary from one club to another and can change depending on the night. Generally, in our Association, you'll find class sizes ranging from 6 to 15 participants.

What are the costs?

Some Clubs may offer a free taster session.

Training fees generally range from £5 to £10 per session, with some clubs preferring a monthly training fee.

Some offer special pricing for your first few practices but this varies club to club. Details are provided with the individual club pages on this website.
