British Aikido Board(BAB) - Insurances

The blue slip shows a person is insured to practice / train in Aikido.

Civil liability insurance, for all members covers the legal liability for compensation and defence costs arising out of third-party loss, injury, damage in connection with the practice of Aikido and includes public liability, professional indemnity, and member to member cover.

Personal accident cover in connection with Aikido activities into Ltd to accidental death and or permanent and total disablement.

The green slip shows

Registration of this Association Club includes BAB Civil Liability Insurance for the Club, its Committees and members.

It covers the legal liability for compensation and defence costs arising out of the Third Party loss, injury, damage connection with the Club's aikido activities includes public liability, professional indemnity, liability for damage to leased and rented premises, and indemnity to Principals.

As with any insurance if it has expired there is no cover. Coach & Student insurance is only valid for its members if their Association is a current member of the BAB.

There are two elements of cover:-

  • Professional Indemnity & Civil Liability Cover.
  • Personal Accident Cover. (New : Improved terms wef 20th August 2024) Link

Reporting an Incident

The LA Membership Secretary should be immediately informed about any "Incident" who will assist the Club Leader to ensure the appropriate process is followed in reporting the matter promptly. There is likely to be two forms to be be completed one by the injured person and one by the Instructor.

 

BAB material regarding Insurance on their website should be given precedent if a difference emerges from this website.


Additional Information

  • The BAB website says on their Insurance home page ...."In the list of documents below you should be able to find everything you need to know regarding your aikido training insurance with the British Aikido Board." If you have any queries after reading the policies and certificate / Policy schedules that are are online then raise that with the LA Membership Secretary in the first instance.

  • The insurance cover is for Aikido not for other martial arts.

  • There is no cover for live blades. (Oct 2023)

  • Their Insurance Officer has confirmed (April 2024) the published information in 2017 regarding Taster Sessions is still appropriate. See details. Please note simple recording of details to qualify.

  • Cover is extended only to people who are resident in the UK. People who are resident, with a permanent address for a substantial part of a year are also included.

  • Since February 2024 the BAB is able to provide cover under our existing professional indemnity and civil liability terms for visiting international Senseis. Subject to the association and/or club providing the information noted below to the BAB Insurance Liaison Officer.

          Information Required:
         A Sensei' name.
         B Name of organisation.
         C Grade.
         D Date of Birth.
         E Dates of teaching /i insurance required.

On receipt of this information the BAB will be able to issue your association/club with a formal insurance endorsement noting that cover has been provided for the dates required.

The BAB's personal accident cover will not be made available to the Sensei being invited to teach.  It is his or her responsibility to ensure that they have adequate protection in place.
