Grading Etiquette
Candidates get called up by Sensei followed by their Ukes.
Bowing:
Sensei will say:
At the beginning
Firstly "shomen ni rei", to the shrine or picture.
Then "otagai ni rei" (to each other)
Extra ukes get sent to the side of the mat.
You should automatically bow to Sensei out of respect and
politeness as he would not ask you to bow to him. That is not
how it's done.
Return to your position at the end
At the end:
"otagai ni rei" (to each other)
"shomen ni rei"
All return to the edge of the mat and sit down
Again Sensei may help to guide by saying "otegai ni rei" for bow
to ukes and "Shomen ni rei" for bow to him but don't expect this
or wait for it.
