Examiner Guidance

Our Technical Director, is responsible to Hombu for gradings. Sensei takes Dan Gradings, with Kyu gradings taken by Club Leaders (Dojo Cho) up to 2nd Kyu on behalf of Sensei. The content put on this page is so it may be read as a standalone document - for the reader's ease.

Extracts from this page will appear on other pages where there is a need for emphasis.

Kyu Grades (excluding 1st Kyu)

Up to 2nd Kyu gradings are generally conducted at the Club by the Club's Leader (Dojo Cho) provided they are 2nd Dan or higher, and are known to and approved by Sensei. (In bold referred to as the proviso.) If they are 1st Dan they will need to bring in an appropriately qualified Leader from another Lancashire Aikikai Club who meets the proviso so they may jointly grade.

Club Leaders (Dojo Cho) up to 2nd Kyu

Will ensure:
i) The interval between the last grading is at least the required amount. It is very likely to be more.

ii) Association standards will be upheld for the grade being pursued.

iii) Candidates will be assessed in a fair and consistent manner.

iv) Provide clear instructions but be prepared for a candidate struggling to understand what you are wanting.

v) Post-Examination: Provide constructive feedback to Kyu grade candidates on the Grading form. Record and report the results accurately and promptly.

To 2nd Kyu

Gradings - will generally take place in the local club up to and including 2nd Kyu gradings.

Consistency and moderation of standards for grades will be through Association courses and direction of our Technical Director and Head of Association. Our Technical Director recognises the standards we have adopted and we should continue to maintain these.

As Aikidoka gain experience you will appreciate the benefit of training on our courses and visiting other Clubs, to gain new perspectives and learning to adapt to differing people quickly.

Taking ukemi in the widest sense is important.

Examiners and Coaches should familiarise themselves with BAB requirements in respect of Aikido for under 18 year olds and vary what is asked accordingly. As would be done with candidates with health issues.

For 1st Kyu Gradings

For 1st kyu gradings the Grading Review Group (GRG) must have seen and approved the candidate as ready. The grading is then undertaken by a panel of 3 Dan Grades (2nd Dan or higher) convened by the GRG. For Dan Grade candidates need to be recommended by the GRG to our Technical Director this is covered on Dan Grade page.

Club Leaders should contact the Grading Review Group (GRG) achieves 2nd Kyu at least after 6 months or earlier so the GRG may follow their progress and work with the Club Leader particularly when approaching the 1st Kyu standard. The GRG will set up an opportunity to grade when in their view the standard is reached or likely to in the next few months.

1st Kyu gradings will take place on Aikikai courses. They are organised by the GRG. GRG appoints a Panel.

For testing at 1st Kyu a grading panel, usually of three, is convened by the Grading Review Group (GRG) when candidates have met or exceeded the standard required and been recommended by their Club Leader (Dojo Cho). The GRG will ensure the lead panel member meets the proviso. Other members of the panel must hold a Dan Grade and will include the Club Leader of the candidate.

The grading panel should be briefed by the Club Leader on:

  • health issues
  • grading history

The convened Panel should discuss, in advance, how the grading will be organised and tasks allocated within the Panel. It is recommended that the calling of techniques should be by one person at any one time to avoid confusion.

Preparation:

i) Familiarise yourself with the grading syllabus and requirements. (Kyu grade print pdf sheet )

ii) Especially the time intervals between grades as outlined in the Syllabus. The period starts from when the last grading certificate was issued by Hombu to the planned grading date.

.

iii) Think through what you are going to ask the student to do.

iv) Attend relevant courses and seminars to stay informed and updated.
